[과학칼럼] 스마트 안경을 통해 보는 더 넓어진 세계

빠르면 올해 안에 공상과학 영화에서 등장하는 미래의 우주인처럼 범상치 않은 모양의 최첨단 안경을 쓰고 거리를 누비는 일반 사람들의 모습을 보게 될 것 같다. 지난 4월5일 미국의 구글X 연구소는 ‘프로젝트 글래스’라는 비밀 계획을 통해 개발 중인 스마트 안경 시제품을 공개하여 세계를 놀라게 했다. 그야말로 최첨단의 초소형 전자부품, 정보통신, 센서, 광학, 디스플레이 등 하드웨어 기술과 음성인식, 정보검색, 증강현실 등 소프트웨어 기술이 조그마한 안경 안에 집적되어 있기 때문이다.

구글의 스마트 안경은 안경테의 오른쪽 눈 윗부분에 투명한 작은 사각형 렌즈 화면이 있는데 바로 앞에 20~30인치의 TV를 통해 보는 것과 같은 시각적 효과를 준다고 한다. 이 투명 렌즈 화면에는 14가지 메뉴 선택에 따라 그래픽 화면이 더해지게 되어 있는데, 현재 시간과 날씨는 물론 메시지와 연락처, 위치정보 같은 것이 상황에 맞추어 디스플레이 된다. 또한 대부분의 명령은 인공지능 음성인식 기술로 해독되어 화면을 통해 반응하게 되어있다.

구글이 공개한 유튜브 동영상을 보면 스마트 안경의 기능이 얼마나 놀라운지를 실감할 수 있다. 아침에 일어나 창밖을 쳐다보면 현재 시간과 날씨가 안경 렌즈를 통해 그래픽으로 표시된다. 일정을 확인하고 걸어서 약속장소로 가는 동안에 가야할 방향과 거리도 표시되는데, 길 가는 도중 근방에 있는 친구의 정보도 알려주고 인상적인 거리 풍경의 사진도 찍으며 걸려온 전화를 받아 화상통화도 할 수 있게 한다. 이러한 다양한 정보 제공에 정신이 팔려 전봇대나 행인과 부딪치는 부작용을 담은 패러디 동영상도 유튜브에 올라왔지만 언론 보도를 보면 스마트 안경의 미래에 대해 온 세계가 공감하고 있는 듯하다.

원래 안경은 그 사전적 의미대로 “시력이 나쁜 눈을 잘 보이게 하기 위해서나 바람, 먼지, 강한 햇빛 따위를 막기 위하여 눈에 쓰는 물건”으로서 13세기 후반 이태리에서 만들어지기 시작하였고, 15세기 중반 구텐베르크의 활자 발명이 폭발적인 보급의 기폭제가 되었다. 그 후 근시, 원시, 난시 등 시력에 대한 체계가 정립되고 그에 맞는 경량 렌즈와 경량 안경테 및 콘텍트 렌즈 기술 등이 발전되면서, 안경은 착용하기 쉬우면서도 떨어진 시력을 맞춤형으로 보완해 줌으로써 개인의 일상생활에서 없어서는 안될 존재가 되어버렸다.

이러한 안경이 이제는 사람의 부족한 능력을 보완해 주는데 그치지 않고 사람의 능력을 더욱 확장해 주는 도구로 변신하고 있다. 스마트폰에 들어 있던 최첨단의 스마트 정보통신 기술이 이제 안경으로 옮겨가고 있는 것이다. 이 기술의 최상위 응용단에는 사용자의 눈에 보이는 현실세계 위에 컴퓨터가 만들어 내는 가상의 물체를 겹쳐 보여주는 ‘증강현실(AR: Augmented Reality)’ 기술이 있다. 컴퓨터에서 파악하는 사용자에게 유용한 정보는 그래픽 가상 물체로 바뀌어 스마트 안경을 통해 현실세계에 보기 쉽게 겹쳐지게 되므로, 사용자는 자신이 파악하는 범위 이상의 정보를 받아 행동하는 슈퍼맨이 될 수 있는 것이다.

구글의 스마트 안경과 비슷한 개념으로 상품화된 착용형 안경들이 현재 몇 개 시중에 나와 있다. 뷰직스사의 ‘Star 1200’, 엡손사의 ‘Muverio’, 브라더사의 ‘AiRScouter’, 소니사의 ‘HMZ’ 등인데, 모두 증강현실 기능은 제공하고 있으나 무선통신 기능이 지원되지 않아 휴대성이 떨어지거나 고화질의 동영상 디스플레이로 인한 높은 가격의 문제를 갖고 있다. 또한 구글의 스마트 안경처럼 일상생활에서의 시공간 정보를 제공하도록 만들어져 있지 않다.

우리나라에서는 아직 비슷한 제품이 나오지 않았고 올해부터 지식경제부 산업융합 원천기술 개발과제 중의 하나로 기술 개발을 시도할 계획이다. 구글이 발표한 대로 스마트 안경은 머지않아 일상생활에서 개인의 필수품으로 자리 잡게 될 것으로 보인다. 아직 시제품 단계에 있는 만큼 스마트폰에서의 대한민국 성공 신화를 스마트 안경에서도 이어갔으면 좋겠다.
