우리나라의 대표적인 통신 서비스 회사인 KT는 지난 4월20일 서울 광화문 올레스퀘어에서 스마트 홈의 전략방향을 소개하면서, 스마트 홈 구현의 첫 단계로 유아용 로봇친구 <키봇>을 출시하고 예약판매에 들어간다고 밝혔다.
<키봇>은 미래 스마트 홈에서 생활하게 되는 유아에게 특화된 로봇형 정보통신 단말기라고 한다. <키봇>은 홈페이지를 통해 동요, 동화, 애니매이션 등 다양한 콘텐츠를 다운받아 몸동작과 더불어 재생함으로서 집에서 아이들과 친근하게 놀아주며 교육도 가능한 장점을 발휘한다. 또한, 가족사진이 붙어있는 RFID(무선인식 전자태그)를 보여주면 번호를 누르지 않고도 영상통화가 가능하며, 사전에 등록된 휴대전화로 원격 조정해 집안 내부를 영상으로 확인할 수도 있다.
<키봇>과 같은 서비스 로봇의 개념은 약 5년 전 우리나라의 우수한 정보통신기술을 미래 시장 잠재력이 큰 로봇 분야에 접목시켜 새로운 성장동력으로 만들어보고자 했던 옛 정보통신부의 유비쿼터스 로봇과 그 틀을 같이 한다. 유비쿼터스 로봇에서 기술적으로 가장 강조했던 사항은 로봇의 두뇌에 해당되는 지능적인 서비스를 로봇 단말에서만 처리하지 않고 서버에서 공유하는 구조로서, 로봇 단말기의 가격을 낮추고 사용자에게 다양한 서비스를 제공해주는 혁신적인 개념으로 알려진 바 있다.
당시 KT에서는 초고속 무선 네트워크에 기반한 유비쿼터스 로봇 서비스에 많은 관심을 갖고, 한국전자통신연구원을 중심으로 한 연구개발사업과 기존 로봇업체들과 협조체계를 갖춘 시범사업에 적극적으로 참여하기도 하였다. 이러한 경험을 바탕으로 KT는 이번에 자사의 와이파이(Wi-Fi) 네트워크를 바탕으로 미디어 플레이어 제작업체인 아이리버사와 손잡고 유아용 로봇친구 <키봇>을 출시하기에 이른 것이다.
KT는 <키봇>이 지난날 유비쿼터스 로봇에서 개발된 기술을 그대로 활용하고 있으나, 아이들의 눈높이에 맞추어 기능을 가볍게 가져가고 유무선 통합 네트워크 환경의 사용을 극대화 한 것을 차별화된 포인트로 강조하고 있다. 사실 5년 전 정보통신부 주도로 유비쿼터스 로봇 실용화를 부르짖을 당시에는 RFID 기술도 그리 무르익지 않아 활용도가 떨어졌고 사용자들에게 제공되는 로봇 서비스도 너무 두루뭉술하게 일반화된 경향이 있었다. <키봇>은 이러한 단점들을 어느 정도 개선하여 유아의 놀이와 학습 및 부모의 배려를 서비스에 담아내며 미래 유아용 스마트 홈 단말기기로서의 입지를 다지려 하고 있다.
<키봇>의 출시가 갖는 또 다른 의미는 대기업과 중소기업의 상생모델에 기초한 서비스 로봇의 비즈니스 생태계 구축을 시도하였다는 점이다. 필자를 비롯한 많은 로봇 전문가들은 대단위의 개인용 서비스 로봇 비즈니스는 스마트폰에서처럼 서비스 사업자와 단말기 제조사가 협력하는 모델이 될 것으로 예측해 왔다. 특히, 어디서나 접근 가능한 네트워크를 활용하는 개인용 서비스 로봇에 있어서 서비스 사업자의 역할은 통신사업자가 맡고, 혁신제품으로서의 로봇단말기는 중소벤처기업이 담당하는 것이 더욱 바람직해 보였다. <키봇>에서는 국내 최대의 통신사업자인 KT가 서비스를 맡고 한때 MP3 플레이어를 세계에서 가장 잘 만든 바 있었던 아이리버사가 로봇 단말기를 만들어 바람직한 협력 모델을 제시하고 있다.
한때 고급 휴대폰분야에서 세계 최고를 자부하던 우리나라가 혁신적인 비즈니스 모델로 무장한 애플사에 주도권을 내어준 선례를 되새겨 본다면, 이번에 KT를 중심으로 제시한 정보통신 기술을 기반으로 한 새로운 로봇 비즈니스에 기대를 걸어 보아도 좋을 듯하다. 정말로 스마트한 세상은 사람과 함께 생활하는 로봇의 등장과 더불어 오게 될 것 같다.
