세계 최대의 전자 상거래 업체인 미국의 아마존닷컴은 지난 3월 19일 성명을 통해 물류 로봇 제조사인 키바시스템즈(Kiva Systems)를 현금 7억7500만 달러에 인수하기로 했다고 발표했다.
아마존닷컴은 월가의 펀드매니저이던 30세의 제프 베조스가 1994년에 설립한 세계 최초의 인터넷 서점으로서 서비스 개시 1년 동안 월 34%의 평균 매출 신장률을 보이며 인터넷 전자상거래의 돌풍을 일으킨 바 있었다. 1990년대 말 인터넷 비즈니스의 거품으로 잠시 주춤했었지만 2003년 처음으로 연간 이익을 내었고, 책뿐만 아니라 전자제품, 옷, 가구, 장난감 등으로 제품라인을 다양화 하면서 세계 최대의 전자 상거래 업체로 떠오르게 되었다. 최근에는 킨들이라는 전자책을 만들어 스마트 패드 분야에서도 강자로 부각하고 있다.
한편, 키바시스템즈는 최근 기존의 물류관리 개념을 혁신적으로 바꾼 ‘로봇 창고관리 시스템’을 개발하여, 의류회사 갭, 장난감 회사 토이즈러스, 사무용품 회사 오피스 데포 등에 납품하면서 세계적인 혁신 기업으로 알려지기 시작하였다. 이 시스템은 수많은 선반 위에 다양한 물건들이 쌓여있는 거대한 창고에서 담당 직원이 지정된 물품이 들어있는 선반 번호를 입력하면 이동로봇이 해당 선반 아래로 들어가서 이를 들어 올려 직원에게 갖다 주도록 설계 되어있다.
유튜브 동영상을 통해 보면 수 십대의 오렌지 빛 로봇들이 선반을 들고 복잡한 창고 안에서 서로 충돌 없이 바삐 움직이는 모습이 매우 신기하다. 기존의 컨베이어식 창고관리 시스템은 물품이 직렬로 배치되어 있어 주문된 물건이 도달할 때 까지 기다려야 했지만, 다수의 이동로봇을 통하면 여러 물품의 주문을 병렬로 처리하므로 효율성이 높아진다. 여기에는 여러 대의 로봇이 협력하여 충돌 없이 작업을 수행하는 최첨단의 군집지능 로봇기술이 활용되는 것이다.
군집지능 로봇기술은 기러기나 물고기 같이 군락을 이루는 생명체의 행동을 모방하여 각각의 지능은 그리 높지 않으나 무리를 이루면 지능이 높아지게 하는 기술을 말하는데, 환경감시나 수색 정찰 로봇에서 유용할 것으로 보고 여러 나라에서 원천기술 개발을 진행 중에 있다. 필자도 지식경제부의 지원을 받아 이 연구를 2년째 진행 중에 있는데, 키바시스템즈의 로봇 창고관리 시스템을 군집지능 로봇기술을 실용화한 첫 사례로서 주목하고 있었던 차에 이번 아마존닷컴의 인수 소식을 접하며 로봇 산업의 전개 방향을 흥미롭게 보게 되었다.
아마존닷컴은 전자 상거래에 있어서 물류시스템의 효율성이 바로 생산성으로 이어진다는 인식에서 지난해 물류시스템 혁신을 위해 지난해 46억 달러를 투자했다고 한다. 올해에는 키바시스템즈의 인수를 통해 우선적으로 고객 주문처리와 배송시간을 단축하고 비용을 절감할 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 다른 한편에서 보면 최첨단의 군집지능을 갖는 이동로봇 기술을 확보하여 향후 막대한 잠재력을 갖는 로봇산업에 진출할 기반을 마련한다는 복안도 가지고 있는 것으로 보인다.
기술과 산업 융합의 시대를 맞아 기업은 다각도로 변신을 시도하고 있다. 아마존닷컴은 책에서 시작하여 전자상거래 품목들을 늘려 왔고, 전자책 킨들을 공급하면서 클라우드 기반의 디지털 콘텐츠 사업으로 범위를 넓혀가고 있다. 더 나아가서 이번에 로봇업체를 인수하면서 물류 시스템의 혁신과 로봇사업의 진출이라는 두 가지 포석을 두고 있다.
이제 아마존의 로봇군단은 물류 창고에서 물품들을 나르는 일은 물론, 킨들을 장착한 채로 우리에게 다가와 원하는 책을 감정을 실어 읽어 주거나 원하는 음악을 틀어주게 될 것 같다. 앞으로 아마존이 혁신적인 로봇 회사로 변신해 가기를 기대해 본다.
