2011년6월12일 한국전자통신연구원 책임연구원/공학박사 조영조
지난 3월 말 대전 국립과학관으로부터 4월 5일부터 6월 6일까지 열리는 “신기한 로봇세상 체험전” 기간 동안 3번의 토요일을 골라 강연을 해 달라는 부탁을 받았다. 주중에는 대전에서 근무하고 주말에 분당에 있는 집에서 가족과 함께 지내는 몸인데, 황금 같은 주말을 그 것도 세 번씩이나 포기하라는 말에 잠시 망설여졌다. 그러나 로봇에 관심을 가진 꿈나무들과 모처럼 소통할 기회이고, 휴보를 만든 KAIST 오준호 교수님과 실버로봇으로 유명한 KIST 김문상 박사님도 기관을 대표해서 강연진에 합류하니까 ETRI를 대표해서 꼭 참여해달라는 말에 이내 허락을 해버렸다.
어린이들의 눈높이에 맞춰 제목을 “로봇과 함께하는 미래세상”으로 짓고 나서, 우리가 공상과학 애니메이션과 영화에서 꿈꿔왔던 로봇들과 대비하여 현재까지 등장한 다양한 로봇의 모습을 수십 개의 동영상으로 엮어 자료를 착실히 준비하였다.
드디어, 첫 강연을 하기로 한 4월 16일 일찌감치 강연장이 마련된 특별전시관으로 들어섰을 때, 전시관에 들어와 있는 입장객 수가 너무 적은데 먼저 놀랐고 비좁은 한쪽 구석에 스탠드형 스크린과 야외 마이크시설이 설치된 열악한 강연 환경에 다시 놀랐다. 더구나 10명 남짓한 초등학생과 부모님들이 청중으로 자리한 가운데 강연에 임하게 되어 처음에는 다소 불쾌한 심경이 들었으나, 한 명이라도 강연을 듣고 꿈을 키운다면 의미가 있으리라 생각하며 1시간여 동안 준비한 것을 열심히 쏟아내었다.
첫 강연을 마치자 한 초등학교 5학년 여학생과 어머님이 일부러 내 강연에 맞추어 찾아왔다며 사진을 같이 찍고는 로봇 디자인에 관심이 있는데 앞으로 어떻게 준비하면 좋겠냐고 상담을 청해 왔다. 꿈이 상당히 구체적이라서 필요한 공부를 차분히 해 나가면 성공적인 로봇과학자로 클 수 있으리라는 희망에 열악한 강연 환경의 불쾌함은 눈 녹듯 사라지고 주말을 희생한 강연의 보람을 느낄 수 있었다.
첫 강연의 호된 신고식 때문인지 5월 중에 있었던 나머지 두 차례의 강연에서는 음향시설도 다소 보완되었고 40여명 정도 들어가는 좌석이 가득 들어찰 정도로 청중이 모여들어 나름대로 성황을 이루었다. 강연 중에 던진 몇 가지 질문에 대한 대답을 들으며 꿈나무들의 과학상식이 상당한 수준에 도달해 있음을 느꼈고, 호기심 많고 초롱초롱한 눈망울에서 로봇과학의 밝은 미래를 볼 수 있었다.
이번 행사는 한 이벤트 회사가 대전 국립과학관의 특별전시관에서 로봇을 직접 만져보고 작동시켜 봄으로써 청소년들이 로봇의 원리를 이해하고 체험 학습의 기회를 제공하기 위해 기획하였다고는 하나 아이들의 상상력을 채워주기엔 부족함이 많았다. 로봇이라는 관심 있는 주제를 전시로 이끌고 유명 과학자의 초청강연을 마련한 것은 좋으나, 전시된 로봇의 숫자도 부족하고 수준도 열악해 과학 꿈나무들에게 로봇에 대한 잘못된 인식을 심어주지는 않았을까 우려스러웠다.
로봇은 청소년들에게 과학에 대한 관심을 불러 일으켜 주고 과학 미래의 꿈을 상징하기도 하기 때문에 과학 교육에 종사하는 사람들은 전시나 강연을 기획하는 데 더욱 철저한 준비를 필요로 한다. 이번처럼 로봇이라는 좋은 주제만 알리고 준비는 잘 안되어 있는 상태에서 현장 학습으로 청소년을 동원해 수익을 올리는 식의 행사가 된다면 우리의 과학 꿈나무들에게 꿈을 주기보다는 빼앗아 버리는 우를 범하게 될 것이다. 과학 꿈나무들은 잠재력이 무궁무진하지만 정성스럽게 가꾸지 않으면 곧 시들어버리는 연약한 존재라는 사실을 항상 염두에 두어야 할 것이다.
