지난 4월 7일 한국전자통신연구원(ETRI)에서 열린 로봇기술 오픈랩 행사에는 로봇산업 관계자 200여명이 모여 ETRI가 보유한 지능형로봇 관련 주요기술들의 소개와 시연을 보며 로봇산업 발전을 위한 기술협력에 대해 활발한 논의가 이루어졌다.
2004년 필자가 지능형로봇연구단장으로 부임한 이래 ETRI 70여명의 연구원들이 개발해 온 로봇기술의 면면을 보면, 인간생활 동반자로서의 서비스로봇을 대상으로 하며 IT(정보통신기술)를 기반으로 한 소프트웨어 중심의 로봇 요소기술을 위주로 하고 있다.
이러한 로봇은 일본에서는 “파트너 로봇“ 서구에서는 우리와 마찬가지로 ”동반자(Companion) 로봇“이라 부르는데, 일일이 명령에 따라 일을 수행하기보다는 사람이 처한 상황이나 의도에 따라 반응하며 허드렛일 보다는 주로 정보서비스를 제공한다. 영화 ”스타워즈“에서 R2D2 로봇과 비슷한 서비스 개념으로서, 지금까지 일본과 한국의 기업에서 초창기 보급형 로봇의 기본모델로 여겨 수십 종류의 시제품을 만들어 실생활 적용시험을 해 오고 있다.
동반자 로봇 시장에서 가장 각광을 받는 로봇은 원격지의 사람이 로봇을 통해 현지에 있는 사람처럼 행동하게 하는 소위 “텔레프레즌스 로봇”이다. 미국 InTouch Health사의 “RP-7″이란 로봇은 얼굴에 모니터를 달고 바퀴로 움직이는데, 실제 병원에서 의사대신 회진을 돌며 의사와 환자들 사이에 화상전화를 연결해 준다. 존스홉킨스 병원의 조사에 따르면 환자의 57%가 로봇회진을 매우 편안하게 생각하였고, 50%는 실제 의사회진 보다 로봇회진을 더 선호하였다고 한다. 한편, MIT 미디어랩에서는 지난달 반자율 아바타로봇 “MeBot”을 발표하여 세계의 이목을 끌었는데, 조작자의 얼굴을 로봇모니터에 표시하고 목 움직임과 게 앞다리 모양의 두 팔로 감정과 의사를 표현함으로서 사람들 간의 의사소통을 원활하게 하는데 큰 도움이 되고 있다고 한다.
지금까지 사람들 간의 일차적 의사소통 도구는 전화기였고, 수단은 언어에 의한 것이었다. 정보통신기술의 발달과 더불어 전화기는 휴대폰으로 진화하였고, 휴대폰도 1세대(1G) 아날로그 음성전화에서, 2세대(2G) 디지털음성전화, 3세대(3G) 화상전화 및 인터넷융합, 4세대(4G) 초고속통신지원 휴대폰 등 발전을 거듭해 오고 있다.
전화기의 1차 진화가 휴대폰이라면 2차 진화는 올해 들어 세상을 발칵 뒤집어 놓은 스마트폰일 것이다. 스마트폰은 전화기가 더 이상 일대일 커뮤니케이션에 그치지 않고 사회적 커뮤니케이션 도구로 확장되며, 언어와 화상뿐 아니라 촉각도 의사소통 수단으로 활용될 수 있음을 보여주었다. 이렇듯 전화기는 진화를 거듭할수록 사람이 의사소통할 대상과 영역을 확대시켰을 뿐 아니라, 의사소통의 수단을 더욱 다양하게 확장시켜 왔다.
그러면, 스마트폰이 진화하면 어떠한 형태가 될까?
바로 로봇의 형태를 가질 것이란 것이 필자의 생각이다. 로봇은 자율적인 이동성과 자유로운 동작 및 힘 전달기능 등을 훌륭한 의사소통 수단으로 사용할 수 있다. 또한 로봇을 사용하게 될 때 의사소통의 영역이 대화의 영역에서 물리적 접촉의 영역까지 넓혀질 수 있다는 점에서 미래에 가장 효과적인 의사소통 도구로 각광을 받을 것으로 기대된다.
앞서 언급한 “RP-7″과 “MeBot”은 전화기의 진화된 형태로서의 로봇에 대한 가능성을 보여주고 있다. 가까운 미래에는 스마트폰을 장착하면 사람들 간의 더욱 의사소통이 원활해지는 로봇이 나오게 될 지도 모른다. 더 나가서, 스마트폰에 팔과 다리가 달려 있어 전화가 걸려오면 주인에게 재빨리 달려오고 의사소통에 팔다리를 사용하는 “로봇폰“이 출현하게 되리라는 재미있는 상상도 해 본다.
