지난달 말 과학기술정책연구원에서는 차세대 유망 과학기술 사업을 담은 ‘거대/공공 과학기술 챔피언 발굴 및 글로벌 산업화 전략’ 보고서를 발간했다. 보고서는 우리나라가 기술경쟁력을 갖추었고 세계 시장에 진출하여 막대한 가치를 창출할 수 있는 분야를 중심으로 10대 과학기술 챔피언을 선정하였다.
단기 챔피언에는 기술과 제품을 확보하고 있고 정부와 민간 합작으로 단기적 시장진출과 확대가 가능한 분야로서 중소형 일체형 원자로, 녹색 유시티(Green U-City), 첨단철도, 항공기(고등훈련기, 헬기)가 뽑혔다.
이어서, 중기 챔피언으로는 현재 개발 중인 기술로서 테스트베드 구축과 조기 상용화로 세계 시장 진출 가능성이 높은 분야인 사회안전시스템, 암치료용 입자가속기, 클라우드 컴퓨팅, 사회웰빙(Social Wellbeing) 로봇이 선정되었다.
마지막으로 장기 챔피언에는 국내 또는 세계적으로 도입기에 있고 시장규모가 막대하며 향후 세계 시장 진출을 위해 기술 확보가 시급한 분야인 우주(위성, 발사체), 핵융합이 각각 채택되었다.
사회웰빙 로봇이 중기 챔피언으로 선정된 것은 이제 무인공장에서의 제조용 로봇이 아닌 우리 생활 속의 서비스 로봇이 향후 십년 이내에 막대한 시장으로 다가오게 될 것을 기정사실화 한 일로서 로봇을 전문으로 하고 있는 필자에도 매우 반가운 소식이 아닐 수 없었다.
그렇다면 우리에게 곧 친숙하게 될 사회웰빙 로봇이란 무엇일까?
보고서에서는 ‘복지, 안전, 건강 등 삶의 질 향상에 기여하는 로봇‘으로 정의하고, 청소로봇과 의료용 로봇을 예시하고 있다. 청소로봇은 이제 혼수품목 2위에 들어갈 정도로 보편화 되어 있고, 우리나라 중소기업은 물론 대기업에서도 앞 다투어 신 모델을 출시하는 등 성황을 이루고 있다.
현재 로봇 시장에서 주목을 받고 있는 품목은 수술용 로봇이다. 2000년 초부터 판매되고 있는 미국 인튜이티브 서지컬(Intuitive Surgical)사의 수술용 로봇 다빈치는 대당 30억 정도의 고가에도 불구하고 전 세계 병원에 1000대 이상 보급되어 있다. 아시아에 보급된 다빈치 로봇의 50%이상은 우리나라에 들어와 있고, 의료계는 22개 병원에 25대 정도가 도입되어 있다고 추정한다.
로봇 수술에 관한 한 시행건수나 활용분야 면에서도 우리나라가 독보적인 위치에 있어, 세계 최고 의술을 공인받은 미국 대학병원 의료진이 로봇수술을 견학하러 오는 경우가 꽤 있다고 한다. 로봇을 다루는 손재주가 좋은 우리나라 의사들은 전립선암을 위주로 하는 외국에서와는 달리 갑상선암, 위암 등 못하는 수술이 거의 없다.
어느 분야의 제품이든 현장에서의 활용 경험에서 오는 피드백이 제품의 질을 획기적으로 향상시킨다. 우리나라에서 수술로봇을 만든다면 풍부한 활용경험을 바탕으로 세계적으로 경쟁력 있는 제품을 생산해 낼 수 있을 것으로 보인다. 최근 지식경제부의 산업원천 기술개발 과제로 수술로봇을 개발하고 있고, 우리나라의 소유권이 있는 정형외과 수술로봇 로보닥을 현장에 적용하는 연구도 진행 중에 있어 조만간 우리의 수술로봇이 세계최고로 도약할 날이 멀지 않아 보인다.
아무쪼록 우리가 만드는 로봇이 인간의 삶의 질 향상을 위해 다방면에서 활용되는 사회웰빙 로봇의 시대를 기다려 본다.
