2011년 3월18일 한국전자통신연구원 책임연구원/공학박사 조영조
구조(rescue) 로봇 전문가들이 2차 세계대전 이후 일본의 최대 재앙으로 기록되는 3.11 대지진과 쓰나미 피해지역의 생존자를 구하기 위해 발 벗고 나서고 있다.
대지진 당일 텍사스 A&M 대학의 ‘로봇지원 탐색 및 구조 연구센터(CRASAR)’는 세계적인 전문가들을 텍사스로 불러들여 구조 로봇 워크샵을 진행 중이었는데, 참가자 중 한 사람이 토호쿠 대학의 사토시 타도코로 교수였다. 마침 토호쿠 대학은 이번 지진의 진앙지에서 가까워 가장 큰 피해를 입은 센다이 시에 위치하고 있어, 타도코로 교수 팀은 참사 소식을 듣자 곧 <액티브 스코프 카메라>라는 뱀 모양의 로봇을 들고 자신의 마을로 돌아가 구조 활동을 벌이고 있다.
이 로봇은 8m 가량의 길이에 2.5cm 직경을 갖고 있으며 모터로 구동되는 나일론 강모로 둘러싸여 있고 말단에는 램프와 카메라를 달고 있어 좁은 통로를 비집고 다니며 비디오 탐색을 할 수 있다. 일 초에 5cm 정도의 비교적 저속으로 움직이지만 좁고 가파른 코너를 회전하고 20도 경사지까지도 오를 수 있어 사고 잔해 속에서 이동하기에 적합하다. 2007년 미국 잭슨빌의 주차장 붕괴사고 시 투입되어 자갈 속 7미터를 파고 들어가 피해자의 영상을 전송했던 이력도 있어 이번 대지진 현장에서도 큰 기여를 할 것이 기대된다.
한편 치바 공과대학 ‘미래로봇공학 기술센터’의 에이지 코나야기 교수팀은 4개의 탱크형 무한궤도 바퀴와 6개의 전동모터로 이루어진 이동 로봇 <퀸스>를 탐색 및 구조 작업에 투입하고 있다. <퀸스>의 무한궤도 앞바퀴 2개는 상하 운동이 가능하여 어떠한 지형지물을 갖는 재해 현장에서도 누비고 돌아다닐 수 있게 만들어져 있고, 전동 팔을 장착하여 장애물을 치우거나 문고리를 잡아 열 수도 있게 되어 있다. 또한, 이산화탄소 감지센서와 카메라를 내장하고 있어 매몰된 생존자를 식별하는 것도 가능하다.
미국 텍사스 CRASAR의 센터장으로서 9.11테러와 뉴올리언즈 태풍 재해현장에 로봇을 투입했던 로빈 머피 교수는 일본 대지진과 같은 재해에서의 인명 구조에 유용한 로봇을 다음과 같이 4종류를 들고 있다. 첫째, 빌딩 위에서 아래를 조망하며 감시하는 것이 가능한 로봇 헬리콥터 같은 작은 무인 항공기. 둘째, 붕괴된 건물에 들어가거나 잔해 사이를 미끄러져 들어가 탐색할 수 있는 뱀 로봇. 셋째, 교량 검사나 물밑 복구를 위한 수중 로봇. 넷째, 생존자 탐색을 위한 센서들이 내장되고 원격 조정되는 바퀴달린 무인 로봇 차량. 국경 없는 로봇공학자 모임의 탐색 및 구조 로봇 그룹도 리드하고 있는 머피 교수는 일본의 공식적인 요청이 오면 언제든지 달려가 이러한 4종류의 로봇을 통해 일본 대지진 재해 복구에 기여하겠다는 의지를 보이고 있다.
현재의 과학기술로는 지진 발생을 예보하는 것이 불가능하다. 지진이 발생하면 빠르게 경보하여 대피하거나 피해를 최소화하기 위한 조치를 취하는 것이 최선이고, 일본은 경보시스템이 체계화되어 있어 같은 수준의 지진에 대해 다른 나라보다 피해가 적은 편이다. 그러나, 이번처럼 진도 9.0이라는 어마어마한 지진과 순식간에 마을을 덮쳐버리는 쓰나미에 대해서는 거의 속수무책으로 당할 수밖에 없어 보인다.
재해는 어쩔 수 없다 해도 재해 복구와 인명 구조에는 과학기술이 힘을 보태줄 수 있다. 특히, 로봇 기술은 사람이 들어가 볼 수 없는 구석구석을 탐색하여 인명을 구조할 수 있기 때문에 더욱 값진 것으로 생각된다. 일본 대지진 현장에 뛰어 들어 로봇 기술을 이용해 구조 활동을 벌이고 있는 로봇 전문가들의 활약을 기대해 본다.
