2010년 12월7일 한국전자통신연구원 책임연구원/공학박사 조영조
지난 2일 서울 양재동 엘타워에서는 300여명의 산학연관 로봇산업 종사자들이 모인 가운데 ‘제5회 대한민국 로봇대상 및 로봇산업인의 밤‘ 행사가 성황리에 열렸다. 특히 눈길을 끈 점은 올해 신설된 최고 영예의 로봇산업 유공자 산업포장을 오창석 삼성테크윈 사장이 수상한 것이다. 삼성테크윈은 지능형 감시경계 로봇 통제시스템을 국산화하여 올해 5월에 5천만달러(약 550억원) 상당의 알제리 도심교통 감시로봇 사업을 수주함으로서 새로운 로봇 시장창출과 확대에 크게 기여한 바 있다.
삼성테크윈이 지능형 감시경계 로봇 연구를 착수한 것은 2003년 12월이었는데, 방위사업청과 산업자원부(현 지식경제부)에서 5년간 약 78억원의 연구비를 지원받아 민군겸용사업으로 추진되었다. 2009년 7월 지식경제부는 ‘신성장동력 스마트 프로젝트‘의 하나로 삼성테크윈 주관으로 석유비축기지에 지능형 감시로봇시스템의 실증단지를 구축하는 사업을 선정하여 1년여 동안 연구개발 결과를 실증하는 시험을 실시한 바 있다. 6년여에 걸쳐 산학연관이 협력하여 지속적으로 연구개발과 실용화를 위해 노력한 결과가 역대 최대 규모의 서비스로봇 사업 해외 진출이란 쾌거를 이루어 낸 것이다.
알제리 감시로봇시스템에는 일반인들이 상상하듯 동물처럼 민첩하게 움직이며 감시 경계를 서는 로봇이 들어 있지 않다. 단지 지능형 감시카메라 1,700여대가 주요 도로 곳곳에 설치되어 있어 상호 연동하며 진출입 차량을 인식, 추적, 관리하는 통합 시스템이 구축되어 있을 뿐이다. 지능적인 인지와 판단을 기반으로 한 로봇기술이 전통적인 감시카메라 시스템과 융합되어 부가가치를 획기적으로 높인 지능형 감시로봇시스템으로 탈바꿈하게 된 것이다.
이렇듯 로봇산업은 몸체를 갖는 로봇을 중심으로 물품의 제조에 활용하거나 개인서비스 또는 전문서비스를 제공하는 전통적인 좁은 의미의 로봇산업뿐만 아니라, 로봇기술이 타 산업분야로 융합되어 만들어지는 넓은 의미의 로봇화 산업을 포괄하고 있다. 그렇다면 타 산업분야에 접목되어 부가가치를 높일 수 있는 로봇기술이란 어떠한 것일까?
본질적으로 로봇이란 주어진 작업을 수행하기 위하여 센서를 통해 주변 환경을 인지하고 지능적으로 판단하여 적절한 행동을 하는 기계장치라고 볼 때, 환경 인지와 지능적 판단 및 작업 행동이란 세 가지 기술 요소가 물 흐르듯 이어지는 것이 로봇기술의 핵심이다. 전통적인 로봇에서는 이 세 가지 기술요소가 한 몸체에 들어 있는 것을 전제로 하고 있지만, 시시각각 변화하는 환경에서 다양한 작업을 요구하는 서비스 로봇에서 모든 로봇기술을 한 몸체에 집어넣는 것은 코끼리를 봉고차에 태우기만큼 어려운 일인 것이다. 감시로봇시스템에서는 물체 추적을 위해 상하좌우로 움직이거나 확대축소 기능이 있는 다수의 로봇카메라들이 있지만, 물체를 연동하여 추적하거나 통합적인 감시 경계를 위한 환경 인지와 지능적 판단 등 핵심적 로봇기술은 통신망으로 연결된 별도의 대형 컴퓨터 시스템에서 구현된다.
사회 안전 분야뿐만 아니라 농수산업, 건설 교통, 문화 콘텐츠 등 기존의 다양한 산업분야에서도 로봇기술의 융합은 기존 시장을 더욱 확대하고 기술경쟁력을 더한층 높이게 될 것이다. 이는 곧 로봇산업에서의 신 시장 창출과 신 개념 로봇의 탄생 등 산업발전 선순환 고리로 이어지게 될 것을 의미하기도 한다.
또 한 가지 감시로봇시스템의 성공에서 얻는 교훈은 연구개발과 실증시험 사업으로 이어지는 지속적인 관심과 투자이다. 많은 연구개발 과제들이 1-2년 사이에 만들어지고 사라지는 현실에서 중장기적인 비전을 통한 지속적이고 단계적인 투자와 노력은 성공을 위한 필수 불가결한 조건임을 정책 담당자나 연구 개발자들은 명심해야 할 것이다.
