[과학칼럼] 개인의 가치를 한 차원 높여주는 하늘을 나는 자동차

명절에 고향을 찾아가거나 휴가를 즐기려 자동차를 타고 여행을 떠날 때 꽉 막힌 도로에 갇혀있다 보면 짜증이 나 여행 기분을 잡치게 되는 경험을 누구나 한번쯤 갖고 있을 것이다. 이 때 자동차에서 프로펠러나 날개가 나와 펼쳐지며 드넓은 하늘을 날아서 한달음에 목적지에 도달할 수 있다면 얼마나 좋을까 하는 상상을 다들 해 보았으리라. 이러한 상상이 이제 구체적인 현실로 다가오고 있다.

지난 4월 6일부터 15일까지 미국 뉴욕에서 열린 ‘2012 뉴욕 국제 오토쇼’에서는 하늘을 나는 자동차가 선보여 화제를 모으고 있다. 미국 메사추세츠 주에 있는 항공자동차 전문업체인 ‘테라푸지아’가 개발한 ‘트랜지션’이란 이름의 이 비행자동차는 2인승 차량으로 바퀴와 날개가 4개씩 있어 지상에서는 날개를 접고 달리다가 비행 활주로를 만나면 날개를 펴 개인용 비행기로 변신하게 된다. 트랜지션은 도로에서 시속 112km까지 속도를 낼 수 있고 공중에서는 시속 185km의 속도로 날 수 있으며, 지난 달 시험 비행에서는 1천400피트(426m) 높이의 상공을 8분간 날아오른 바 있다.

한편, 네덜란드의 항공기 개발업체 PAL-V는 도로를 주행하고 하늘도 날 수 있는 1인승 헬리콥터형 비행 자동차의 개발과 시험에 성공했다고 지난 4월 4일 네덜란드 언론을 통해 발표하였다. ‘PAL-V 원’으로 명명된 이 비행 자동차는 고도 1천200m의 상공을 시속 185km의 속도로 500km까지 운항할 수 있으며, 지상에서는 날개를 접은 세 바퀴 자동차가 되어 1천200km까지 주행할 수 있다고 한다.

비행 자동차의 상용화 목표 달성에 가장 가깝게 다가간 것으로 평가받고 있는 트랜지션은 빠르면 내년에 출시될 예정인데, 대당 3억 원이 넘는 고가임에도 불구하고 이번 모터쇼에 선보이기도 전에 100여명이 구매 보증금 1만 달러씩을 걸었다는 소식이다. 그러나 아직 이 비행 자동차들은 교통 체증이 심한 도로에서는 별 도움이 되지 않는다. 비행하려면 꽤나 긴 활주로를 필요로 하기 때문이다. 트랜지션이 이륙을 위하여 필요로 하는 활주거리는 518m나 되고, PAL-V 원은 헬리콥터형이라 좀 더 짧지만 이륙에는 165m, 착륙에는 30m의 거리를 필요로 한다. 집 근처의 작은 공항이나 공터가 비행 자동차용으로 새로 만들어지거나 개축되어야 활용 가능하다는 이야기가 된다.

그렇지만 비행 자동차의 미래는 밝다. 한국항공우주연구원에 따르면 비행 자동차 즉 개인용 비행기(PAV: Personal Air Vehicle)는 2030년경 자동차 시장의 3%를 차지하고 2050년경에는 주요 교통수단이 될 것으로 전망하고 있다. 따라서 세계 각국은 정부 주도하에 다양한 형태의 PAV를 개발해 오고 있으며, 특히 미국에서는 NASA 주관 하에 1990년대 말부터 수억 달러의 자금을 투입하여 단계적인 연구 개발을 수행하였고 이제 상용화를 앞두고 있는 것이다.

현재 단거리 시험 비행에 성공한 정도의 수준에 있는 비행 자동차가 보편적인 교통수단으로 자리 잡기 위해서는 해결해야 할 기술적 난제들이 아직 많이 있다. 먼저, 비행체 자체의 실용성을 확보하기 위해서는 가벼운 차체 설계, 소음과 공해를 줄인 차세대 엔진, 자동차-비행기 몸체 변환 기술이 고도화되어야 한다. 그러나 무엇보다도 복잡도가 한 차원 높아진 환경에서 운전의 안전성을 확보하기 위해서 위성항법장치를 통한 3차원 충돌회피와 자율비행 기술, 추락을 대비한 운전자 보호기술, 고장시 추돌방지 기술 개발이 선행되어야 할 것이다.

이 모든 기술들이 확보되어 하늘을 나는 자동차가 지금 우리가 타고 있는 땅 위의 자동차를 대체하게 된다면, 개인이 사용할 수 있는 공간이 한 차원 늘어나게 되면서 편리성과 신속성은 물론 개인의 가치 활용의 기회도 더불어 한 차원 늘어나게 되는 것이다.
