시간이 갈수록 스마트폰이 말 그대로 더욱 똑똑해져 가고 있다. 이제 전화통화와 문자메시지 교환에만 휴대폰을 사용하는 사람은 거의 원시인 취급을 받고, 스마트폰으로 가상세계에서 사회적 친분을 쌓거나 위치기반 서비스를 활용할 정도가 되어야 시대에 뒤떨어지지 않은 사람으로 인정받는 시대가 되었다. 주말의 해방감을 나타내던 TGIF(Thank God It’s Friday)라는 말이, T(Twitter, 트위터), G(Google, 구글), i(iPhone, 아이폰), F(Facebook, 페이스북)로 바뀌어 스마트폰을 활용한 새로운 소통의 시대가 왔음을 알리기에 이르렀다.
가트너와 IDC의 올해 2사분기 휴대폰 시장조사 보고서에 따르면, 전세계 스마트폰의 판매량은 6300만대로 총 휴대폰 판매량 3억2556만대의 19.4%를 차지하였고, 지난해 같은 기간과 비교해 50.4%의 판매량 증가를 보였다. 한국방송통신위원회와 이동통신 3사에 따르면 국내 스마트폰 가입자는 올해 말 600만명에서 내년에 1650만~1850만명으로 3배 가까운 성장세를 보일 것으로 예상되어, 2012년이 되면 국내 이동전화 고객의 절반 이상이 스마트폰을 사용할 것으로 전망된다.
스마트폰 판매량의 급격한 증가는 다른 각도에서 보면 그 활용 ‘애플리케이션’(응용 소프트웨어를 의미하며 줄여서 ‘앱’이라 부름)이 풍부해지고 그 사용량도 엄청나게 커졌음을 의미한다. 최근 앱은 양적인 증가와 더불어 질적으로도 진화를 거듭하고 있다. 초반기 앱이 기초적인 정보를 제공하는 모바일 인터넷 기능 위주였다면, 최신의 스마트폰용 앱스토어(앱을 판매하는 온라인상의 모바일 콘텐츠 장터)에는 첨단기술을 활용한 스마트 앱이 속속 등장하고 있다. 그 중 가장 눈길을 끄는 것은 아이폰용 <스캔서치>나 안드로이드폰용 <오브제(Ovjet)>등 ‘증강현실’ 기술을 활용한 앱들이다.
‘증강현실(AR: Augmented Reality)’이란 사용자가 눈으로 보는 현실세계에 컴퓨터가 만든 가상 물체나 정보를 합성하여 현실세계를 가상세계로 보완해 주는 기술을 말한다. 1990년 보잉사의 톰 코델이 항공기 전선 조립과정의 가상이미지를 실제 화면에 겹쳐놓고 설명하면서 이 용어를 처음 사용하였는데, 2000년 중반까지 주로 연구개발과 시험적용 단계에 머물러 있다가 스마트폰의 등장과 더불어 실용적인 기술로 각광을 받기 시작하였다.
고해상도의 카메라와 더불어 고성능 그래픽 처리, 고속 무선 데이터 통신, 위성항법장치, 가속도계, 전자나침반 등의 기능을 갖춘 스마트폰이 등장함에 따라, 증강현실 기반의 앱들이 더욱 주목을 받고 있다. 국내 올라웍스사에서 개발한 아이폰용 앱 <스캔서치>의 경우, 카메라로 거리를 비추면 주변 상점정보를 자동으로 찾아 웹사이트와 전화번호는 물론 가는 곳까지의 지도도 제공한다. 하늘을 비추면 날씨정보가 뜨고, 책 표지를 찍으면 온라인 서점에서 가격과 리뷰를 볼 수 있으며, 음반 재킷을 비추면 해당 뮤직비디오도 감상할 수 있다. 미국 MIT에서는 시제품 형태지만 스마트폰에 카메라와 프로젝터만 달면 어디에서나 키보드와 디스플레이 없이도 어디서나 정보를 입출력할 수 있는 <식스센스>라는 최첨단의 증강현실 기술을 선보인 바 있다.
증강현실 시장은 올해 200만달러에서 2014년 7억300만 달러로 급격한 성장을 할 것으로 예상되고 있으며 모바일에서 위치정보서비스(LBS)와 결합하면서 스마트폰 킬러앱으로 자리 잡을 전망이다. 이제 막 닻을 올린 증강현실 산업에서 세계적인 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해서 체계적인 산업기반 데이터베이스 구축과 창의적인 앱 발굴에 더욱 매진해야 할 것이다.
