추석연휴가 시작되기 바로 전날 그토록 애타게 기다리던 아이폰4를 드디어 손에 넣게 되었다. 여태까지 무선랜 통신만을 지원하던 아이팟 터치를 잘 사용해 오던 터라 적응하는데 그리 오랜 시간이 걸리지 않았는데, 무선랜이 안 잡힐 때는 휴대폰 3G 통신을 통해 어디서나 필요한 앱(어플리캐이션 프로그램)을 돌릴 수 있어서 상당히 편했다.
딸아이의 협조를 얻어 요즈음 장안의 화제인 소셜 네트워킹 서비스의 총아 “트위터“를 설치하고 사용하기 시작하였고, 두달여 전부터 가입해서 잘 쓰고 있던 ”페이스북“도 스마트폰에서 활용하기 시작하였다. 누가 뭐래도 개인적으로 활용도가 가장 높은 앱은 역시 실시간 버스운행정보이다. 집 앞 버스정류장에서 버스의 운행상황을 보고 집을 나서면 원하는 버스를 지체 없이 탈 수 있어 시간도 절약되고 기다리는 지루함도 없어 정말 편리하다.
추석연휴 내내 필요한 앱들을 이것저것 올려보고 설정도 바꿔보느라 긴 연휴가 언제 갔느냐 싶게 훌쩍 지나가 버렸다. 어제 저녁에는 외출할 때 나도 모르게 연결이 끊어진 옛 휴대폰을 갖고 나갔다가 잠시였지만 불편하고 갑갑함을 느꼈다. 그 사이 스마트폰 의존도가 심해진 모양이다.
1983년 미국의 심리학자 브로드는 사무자동화 시대에 직면한 인간의 정신적 장애를 “테크노스트레스”라는 용어로 불렀는데, 이는 테크노 불안형과 테크노 의존형 등 두 가지로 분류된다. 최근에 와서 테크노스트레스에 영향을 가장 크게 미치는 기기는 모바일 컴퓨터기기 즉 스마트폰이라 해도 무방할 것이다.
올해 초 한 취업전문회사의 조사에 따르면, 직장인 66.8%가 테크노스트레스 증후군에 시달리고 있으며, 과장급이 80.2%로 가장 많고 대리급, 사원급, 부장급의 순으로 나타났다고 한다. 또한, 스트레스의 유형으로는 테크노 의존형이 63.8%, 테크노 불안형이 36.5%를 차지였으며, 테크노 불안형 중에서는 부장급이 52.8%로 가장 높게 나타났다고 한다.
테크노 의존형의 대다수는 개인용 모바일 기기를 지참하지 않으면 심리적으로 불안함을 느끼며, 반대로 테크노 불안형은 새로운 기기의 사용법에 능숙한 사람들 속에서 소외감을 가장 많이 느낀다고 한다. 어느 형태가 되었건 요즈음 화두인 스마트폰에 의해 많은 사람들이 편리함을 담보로 정신적 장애를 겪고 있다니 참 아이러니컬하다.
인터넷이 보급되기 시작했을 때에도 비슷한 현상이 있었던 것으로 기억한다. 시간이 좀 지나서 보면 젊은 나이의 조기사용자들은 생각보다 인터넷에 유용한 정보가 많지 않다는 실망감에 활용도가 다소 줄어들었다. 반면에 컴퓨터에 대한 공포를 가졌던 중장년층들은 예상보다 사용법이 쉬워 요즘에는 필요한 정도만큼은 인터넷을 자연스럽게 사용하고 있다. 결국은 시간이 지나면서 중용의 도를 터득하게 된 것이라고나 할까?
테크노스트레스는 결국 심리적 양극화로 보여 지기에 결국 중용의 도로 극복될 수 있으리라 생각된다. 테크노 의존형은 기술이 삶을 변화시키는 속도가 생각보다는 더디다는 것을 잘 인식하여 사용빈도를 줄이도록 노력하고, 테크노 불안형은 무턱대고 기술을 좇지 말고 자신의 목적에 맞는 기술만을 선별하여 활용하는 지혜를 발휘하는 것이 해답이다.
정신적인 면을 떠나 중장년층의 스마트폰 공포증을 불러오는 신체적인 약점은 바로 노안이다. 확대하기 전 화면에 써 있는 깨알 같은 글씨를 알아 볼 수 있도록 엄지손가락 정도에 끼워 볼 수 있는 스마트폰 전용 돋보기 악세사리라도 나왔으면 좋겠다.
