새해 초가 되면 세계의 많은 전자산업 종사자들은 세계가전쇼(CES)에 참가하느라 미국 라스베가스로 몰려들어, 이 기간 동안에는 높아진 가격에도 불구하고 비행기와 호텔 잡기가 하늘에 별 따기이다. 올해에는 세계 경제위기의 여파로 미국, 유럽, 일본의 상당수 전자회사들이 전시부스를 줄이거나 불참한 가운데에서도, 우리나라를 대표하는 삼성과 LG전자가 부스 규모를 확대하고 디지털기술로 치장한 화려한 볼거리로 문전성시를 이룬 관람객들의 눈길을 사로잡았다고 한다.
불과 십여년 전만 해도 전자산업에서 일본은 난공불락의 요새처럼 느껴졌고, 일본 가전제품에 대해서는 경외심까지 느낄 정도였다. 특히, 일본의 브라운관 TV들은 한국의 제품에 비해 기능과 화질에서 단연 앞서 있다는 것을 모든 사람들이 인정하는 분위기였다.
그러나, 지난해 삼성전자는 매출액 100조 영업이익 10조를 돌파하는 쾌거를 이뤄내며, 소니, 파나소닉, 도시바 등 일본 9대 전자업체들의 영업이익을 다 합쳐도 삼성전자 이익의 절반에도 못 미치게 하는 대 역전의 신화를 창조하였다. LG나 하이닉스 등 기업을 가세시키면 일본 전자회사들에게는 그야말로 굴욕적인 역전패였다.
현재 전자산업에서 한국이 세계시장을 주도하고 있는 품목은 메모리반도체와 휴대폰 및 TV로 대표된다. 이중에서도 가장 극적인 역전우승을 거둔 품목이 세계 1000억달러 이상의 거대한 시장규모를 갖는 TV라고 할 수 있다. 2005년만 해도 세계 TV시장 점유율은 한국이 20%로 약 40%를 차지하는 일본에 크게 뒤져 있었다. 2006년에는 기업점유율에서 삼성전자가 일본 소니를 누르고 1위를 차지하였고 바로 1년 뒤 LG전자도 소니를 3위로 밀어내고 2위를 차지하였으며, 드디어 작년 3/4분기에는 국가 점유율에서 한국이 35%를 차지하여 33%에 그친 일본을 앞지르기 시작하였다.
아날로그 전자기술에 관한 한 일본은 세계 최고를 자랑하지만, 최근 전자기술은 아날로그에서 디지털 시대로 넘어가는 전환점에 있기 때문에 일본과 한국의 디지털 전자기술 출발점은 동일선 상에 있었다. 일본 기업들이 아날로그 브라운관 방식의 TV에 집착하고 있는 사이에 한국 기업들은 새로운 디지털 방식의 PDP/LCD/LED TV에 대한 집중적인 연구개발을 통해 새로운 모델의 제품을 자주 내 놓았다. 삼성전자의 경우 반도체 주력 연구원 300여명이 새롭게 디지털 TV의 개발에 투입되었다는 것은 잘 알려진 이야기이다. 또한, 일본이 TV의 화질과 기능을 높이는 데 주력한 반면, 한국은 화면의 대형화, 두께의 최박화, 디자인 업그레이드를 중시하였다. 이리하여 TV의 주종이 디지털로 바뀐 오늘날 한국이 세계 TV시장을 석권하게 된 것은 어쩌면 예정된 결과가 아니었나 생각한다.
어디서나 역전승이란 매우 기분 좋고 짜릿한 느낌이다. 특히, 일본과의 승부에서 역전승을 거두는 것은 우리 국민의 정서 상 더할 나위 없이 기쁘다. 스포츠에서의 역전승은 감정상의 카타르시스를 주지만 산업에서의 역전승은 국부를 창출하고 국민들에게 풍요로움을 가져다 준다.
일본이란 나라는 많은 산업분야에서 세계 최고를 달성하고 있는 세계 제2위의 경제대국이며 매우 큰 잠재력을 갖고 있는 나라이다. 전자산업에서도 우리가 트렌드를 잘못 읽고 자칫 역전승의 쾌감에 도취하여 조금이라도 방심하면 재역전을 허용하게 될 수도 있다. 결국 산업분야에서 최고가 되기 위해서는 정책결정과 방향제시가 올바로 된 상태에서 과학기술자들의 부단한 연구개발이 가장 중요한 무기이다.
새해부터는 일반인들은 과학기술에 대해 더 폭넓게 이해하고 과학기술자들은 기술개발에 더욱더 정진하여, 우리나라가 전자산업뿐만 아니라 다른 산업분야에서 더 많은 역전승을 거둘 수 있으면 좋겠다.
